Social worker

VCU Article

Quote from VCU Article

Chelsea provided direct clinical care for over a decade in the Richmond area, specifically with medicaid recipients. Her thorough knowledge of reimbursements, youth programming and clinical expertise, has enabled her to advocate for families within school, legal, social services and housing systems of Richmond. Chelsea was determined to make a more systematic change after her client list was made up of Black Mothers living in the public housing sections of Richmond, a coincidence Chelsea could not ignore. She begin to volunteer and join the boards of non-profits aimed at supporting the families she had worked as a liaison. This includes organizations involved in many of the aspects of people’s lives that help them survive like Planned Parenthood and NAACP. From there Chelsea was appointed to city boards and placed her voice in rooms across the Commonwealth of Virginia to bring the stories of the Black mothers in Richmond she worked with to ensure their erasure would not continue in Richmond politics.

Education

Even though Chelsea always performed high in math science and STEM, Chelsea chose to earn two degrees in Social work. One from Longwood University, the same school her mother graduated from, and earned her Master’s Degree through the Advanced Standing Program at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Family & Background

Chelsea was born in Richmond and raised in Chesterfield where she went to school. Her mother is an ESL Richmond Public Schools teacher who taught most of her career at E.S.H. Green Elementary School. Though her parents divorced, this unique family situation gained Chelsea two sisters that resided in Southside of Richmond and Chesterfield. Chelsea has seen the discrepancies of Richmond city and a county like Chesterfield that are rooted in racial terrors to Black and Latinx people.

Motherhood

Chelsea is a mother a young, bright, imaginative child named Chloe who she co-parents with love and care. They enjoy taking walks, finding playgrounds in the city and hanging by the river.
